TOP 100 Award: Ranga Yogeshwar Honors the Innovative Strength of EPC

News I 2 Jul, 2025

ÜberlingenCongratulations to the innovation powerhouse: Ranga Yogeshwar congratulates EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH from Arnstadt on their success in the TOP 100 competition. The award ceremony, held as part of the German SME Summit, will take place on Friday, June 27, in Mainz for all mid-sized companies that received the TOP 100 seal at the beginning of the year. The science journalist serves as a mentor for the innovation competition, which is being held for the 32nd time. In the scientific selection process, EPC Engineering & Technologies stood out in size category B (51 to 200 employees in Germany), particularly in the category of innovation success. This marks the third time the company has been recognized as a top innovator.

The TOP 100 company profile, published on the occasion of the award, states:

For decades, phosgene was considered an indispensable chemical for the production of polycarbonate – but EPC Engineering & Technologies GmbH in Arnstadt, Thuringia, proves that it’s possible without toxic substances. Over the past 30 years, the company has evolved from a traditional engineering office into a globally sought-after technology licensor that designs complex plants and provides proprietary processes. This development began with early specialized projects focused on sustainable raw material usage and has continued through numerous diverse initiatives. Today, the company delivers patented solutions, enabling, for example, resource-efficient plastic production.

The foundation for this lies in interdisciplinary pilot projects driven by small teams. In these projects, experts in process engineering and chemistry analyze how conventional processes can be optimized in an environmentally friendly manner. “It is our responsibility to successfully continue our tradition and shape it for the future,” says Managing Director Franz-Josef Willems, pointing to the company’s close cooperation with research institutions. As soon as initial concepts show promise, process engineering demonstrators are built at laboratory or pilot scale and tested in collaboration with partners from industry and academia. This allows the company to gather early feedback, enabling the rapid implementation of full-scale industrial plants later on.

Pilot Projects and Technological Expertise
This strategy becomes particularly evident in the phosgene-free process for producing polycarbonate, which completely eliminates the use of toxic components. EPC brings together the expertise of its approximately 125 specialists and integrates concept development, basic engineering, construction supervision, and licensing all under one roof. Managing Director Karol Kerrane emphasizes the critical role of networks in this context: “Through strategic international alliance and long-term collaboration we strive to achieve World’s Best Practice …….together”.´The team uses precise simulations and streamlined decision-making processes to move each project forward in structured phases. As a result, technology and plant operations are seamlessly integrated. Customers benefit from patented solutions that can be quickly incorporated into existing processes.

Globally in Demand, Driven by Strong Team Spirit
When new technologies are licensed externally, a proven step-by-step system is used: A multidisciplinary expert team first defines the objectives, followed by test runs under real-world conditions. Continuous documentation helps identify potential sources of error at an early stage.

“To me, innovation means constantly questioning the status quo—with the courage to take unconventional paths,” says Karol Kerrane. “I’m especially

proud of our team, which turns complex ideas into sustainable solutions every day.”

Alongside technical implementation, collaboration is also key: Flat hierarchies speed up decision-making, and flexible structures enable EPC to respond quickly to rising global demand.

TOP 100: The Competition
Since 1993, compamedia has awarded the TOP 100 seal to mid-sized companies demonstrating exceptional innovative strength and above-average innovation success. The scientific direction has been under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Nikolaus Franke since 2002. Franke is the founder and chairman of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the Vienna University of Economics and Business. With 27 research awards and over 200 publications, he is considered one of the world’s leading innovation researchers.

The mentor of TOP 100 is science journalist Ranga Yogeshwar. Project partners include the Fraunhofer Society for the Advancement of Applied Research and the German Association for Small and Medium-sized Businesses (BVMW). The business magazine manager magazin supports the competition as media partner, while ZEIT für Unternehmer is a cooperation partner.
