EPC PAN
PRODUCTION

PAN production plants from EPC. The desired polymer properties and there are no undesirable side-effects.

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is produced by a number of different methods. The EPC Group specializes in producing PAN by the precipitation polymerization method, which has a very low environmental impact. Purified water is used to dissolve the acrylonitrile monomer. In contrast to solution polymerization, no toxic, explosive or combustible organic liquids are used. The water-insoluble PAN is precipitated as solid matter during the growth of the chain.

In water-based precipitation polymerization, a redox system starts the phase-interface process and the chain growth. The required polymer properties are ensured by controlling the reaction temperature and the polymerization time, while at the same time minimizing undesired side-reactions, the formation of short and long side chains. The polymerization reaction takes place with continuous agitation in a special, multi-stage reactor system designed by EPC.

As radical polymerization never achieves complete conversion, the monomers have to be extracted and recycled. The EPC Group offers a suitable purifying process for this purpose. The solid phase polyacrylonitrile is then separated and dried.

Problems of ordinary PAN systems

Most of the plants for the production of polyacrylonitrile work according to suspension polymerisation. Many of the previous systems have to be shut down and cleaned after a few weeks due to dirt and deposits in the equipment,

which always means a loss of production. In addition, the previous reactors usually have to be replaced after a few years due to the high level of material removal.

PAN – Special reactor material for trouble-free and low-maintenance operation

Most of the plants for the production of polyacrylonitrile work according to suspension polymerisation. Many of the previous systems have to be shut down and cleaned after a few weeks due to dirt and deposits in the equipment, which always means a loss of production. In addition, the previous reactors usually have to be replaced after a few years due to the high level of material removal.

The reactor material developed by EPC, which is based on a special aluminum alloy, is inert to the reaction conditions (no material removal) and in return has no influence on the reaction medium (no uncontrolled reaction behavior).

The material is used for the reactor and for upstream and downstream process steps related to the polymerization reaction. Plant parts made of this material do not have to be replaced over the entire projected plant service life.

By avoiding deposits, the production cycles are extended. The need to clean less often increases production capacity and reduces the use of cleaning agents. The material has strength properties similar to steel and can be processed using standard processing and forming methods (rolling, bending, grinding, polishing, welding).
